The New York Yankees announced this morning that they will seek to keep Derek Jeter only if they can get him for a reasonable price.

Derek Jeter is easily one of the biggest names in professional baseball at this time. For the past 16 years he has led the Yankees to countless victories. As a player he is well rounded, known for being able to swing the bat and play the field as well as any player in the game.

But things are a bit different now. Jeter is a free agent and that means he can freely leave the Yanks if he so chooses. But the Yankees are not willing to pay him an enormous salary these days and it all stems from the famed shortstop’s age.

Jeter is set to turn 37, which is the twilight of a career for most professional baseball players. Not to mention the fact that Jeter is coming off his worst offensive season in his long history with the team.

As such the Yanks have laid a $45 million 3 year contract on the table. This is well below the $189 million 10 year contract that Jeter just finished up. But again, it is widely believed that three years from now will be the retirement date for Jeter.

So the Yankees are encouraging Jeter to test the market to see if he can get a better deal from another team. However, most believe that Jeter will remain with the Yanks despite being offered such a small contract.
