According to a report from Reuters today United States Tennis Association has declared Jim Courier as the captain for the US Davies Cup team.
He has succeeded Patrick McEnroe who was the leader of the team for the last ten years.
Courier said this is what he always aspired to do. He also said that captaining the side would be an enjoyable experience and now he will know whether it is so or not. Courier had retired in 2000 as a player.
He had won four grand slams which included 1992 and 1993 Australian open and 1991 and 1992 French open titles. He had held the number one ranking for a total of fifty-eight weeks.
He had also helped team US to win the Davies cup title in the years 1992 and 1995. He had an impressive record of 16-10 in this tournament. His first challenge will be in the form of Chile in March.
Courier had also said that it is going to test the capabilities of the players as the match is going to be held in South America so it will most probably be played on clay.
US had won the Davies cup title in the year 2007 when McEnroe was captain.
He had also said that the bonding among the players under Patrick was great and if they can continue that spirit then they have a great chance of winning the tournament.
According to the new captain the squad has a lot of diversity. There are veteran players in the form of Mardy Fish, Andy Roddick and the Bryan brothers. He expects James Blake to come back in form.
