Many Options for Cliff Lee
By Gabriela MooreDec 2 2010
This morning pitcher Cliff Lee met with the Texas Rangers to discuss a possible new contract for the 2011 major league baseball season.
Ever since the World Series ended that Cliff Lee became a free agent the teams of major league baseball have sought to sign the young pitcher. He proved to be a powerful force on the mound during regular season play. But he faltered some during the World Series, showing little of the skill that he offered during the regular season. But he is still a hot ticket.
There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that many teams would give anything to have Cliff Lee in their bullpen. But there are some major players out there that may be pulling out all the stops to make it happen. The New York Yankees are one of the leaders in the fight to find Lee a new home.
There are few in the league that can match the financial muscle of the Yankees and they are well-known for getting what they want especially when they start talking salary figures. However, the issue could be less about money and more about where Lee will be living.
The Texas Rangers are closer to Lee’s home, a home that his wife is not thrilled about giving up. Plus, the Rangers are still willing to give Lee another contract that is surely going to be much larger than the current contract terms.
The fight is on and there will likely be more teams throwing their hat into the ring for Cliff Lee.
