Activision announced yesterday that sales figures in the US for their new Call of Duty: Black Ops video game have broken records.

The newest edition of the award-winning video game franchise has topped $360 million in total sales. This puts it at the top of the list where video games are concerned.

This is an amazing feat considering the fact that Call of Duty: Black Ops is fourth installment of the game franchise.

However, first person shooter games often do well in the market. As a whole, the first person shooter genre is the crown jewel in the video game market. However, the games have often come under fire for their violence, something that is currently being debated in the Supreme Court right now.

For the time being there is nothing but smiles at the Activision headquarters. They believe that total sales for the new game could top $1 billion, tying “Titanic” for the top spot in entertainment sales to the general public.

With the busy holiday shopping season still ahead, Activision is estimating that they will more than double the sales of the popular video game before the end of December. This could push the game well ahead of the nearest competitor, Halo: Reach.

Activision has also said that players can expect a wide variety of extended maps to be released for the Black Ops edition. The popularity of Nazi Zombies, which was attached to Call of Duty: World at War, has warranted further releases.
