Barnes and Noble, the world’s largest bookstore chain, announced yesterday that their eReader, the Nook, was the bestselling product of all time.

This new claim comes in response to the claim by Amazon that the Kindle, their own eReader device, was their bestselling product for the past 15 years. Both companies appear to be enjoying a surge in sales thanks to their eReader devices.

Tracking the sales of the two devices is incredibly difficult. Both companies allow affiliate retailers to sell their full line of products through outside websites and those sales are often tabulated later in the year.

Nonetheless, many product research companies have said that the Kindle is the bestselling of the two devices in sheer numbers. Several million of the devices have been purchased in the last several months and the orders continue to roll in for Amazon.

However, Barnes and Noble is no slouch in this department. They have sold millions of their Nook as well but they are still trailing Amazon in this department.

The eReaders are targeted to the avid readers in the world that want a small device to carry all of their reading material. Most of the devices on the market can hold 1000’s of digital books and magazines. Furthermore, the devices also allow for music and audio books to be played.

Borders, the embattled bookstore chain second only to Barnes and Noble also released an eReader this season, known as the Kobo, but have failed to make it successful.
