Yao Ming, the first successful Chinese player in the NBA, announced yesterday that he was benched for the rest of the season due to a stress fracture in his ankle.

This is the second season ending injury that the huge Houston Rockets player has received in two years. The injury occurred on the same ankle that was broken last season in a dramatic play. Doctors originally believed that Ming has simply sprained the ankle but x-rays revealed a stress fracture.

This is nothing out of the ordinary for a player that is as tall as Ming. But the young guard has a lot riding on his career in basketball. Besides being one of the best in the game, he is also acting as a representative for the entire country of China, a position that he takes very seriously.

But Ming has also said that he takes being American just as seriously. In his time in the US he has delved into the lifestyle of the American people. He reported on Friday that he now has a favorite food, fried chicken, and he loves to watch American situation comedies on television.

However, the disappointment that he feels after being informed of his injury is life altering. Since he was a young boy he has been groomed to be a basketball player. His size, which is well beyond the normal height range for the Asian people, dictated the path the he would take. The Rockets said that Ming will still be on hand for all games for the remainder of the season.
