This morning New York police officials have confirmed that the eldest son of Bernie Madoff, Mark, was found dead of an apparent suicide in his Manhattan apartment.

Today is the second anniversary of Bernie Madoff being sent to prison for a total of 155 years. His son Mark was thought to be involved with the massive financial scam that was pulled off by his father. He and his younger brother were investigated by the FBI but there were never any charges filed in the case.

But the case has had major financial ramifications throughout the Madoff family. Madoff’s two sons worked for him during his scam, receiving massive salaries and expense accounts. As such civil lawsuits have been filed against the family members to recoup losses for the victims.

At the time of his death Mark Madoff was facing some $200 million in civil lawsuits but they were all pending with no outcome listed at this time. This calls into question why he would take his own life.

The police are not releasing any information other than to say that he took his own life by hanging. To further complicate the issue, his two-year old son was sleeping in the adjoining room when the suicide took place.

There has been no word about a possible suicide note or reasoning for the death at this point. Police officials have said that they are continuing to investigate the matter and will release new information when the investigation is completed.
