Saturday was a big day for small businesses in the US who reported a dramatic increase in sales from the previous reporting year.

Over the past two decades big box stores have largely taken over the landscape of retail markets. This has pushed the smaller businesses out of the picture, creating a shortfall in the number of personal retailers that help consumers with their shopping needs.

The federal government has been working for the past three years to save the small business market, stating that they are the future of the US as a whole. Most of the programs that were instituted by the federal government ended with complete failure and no results.

With that in mind the small businesses decided to take matters into their own hands. Using the popular Black Friday model, the small businesses across the US formed what has come to be known as Small Business Saturday.

The system for Small Business Saturday was simple. The smaller companies would lower prices for a single day of the shopping season to attract consumers. Shoppers would flock to the stores where they could find great deals and a level of personal service that is not well-known in the big box retail outlets.

This year Small Business Saturday was a great success for the smaller companies in the US and they are hoping to be able to keep the momentum going for the entire holiday season. This has encouraged the small businesses and will help a good many of them keep their doors open.
