Derek Jeter is a New York icon, but today he is a free agent hoping to sign a larger contract with the Yankees.

The problem is that Jeter does not have the necessary leverage to garner a massive contract. He has already made $203 million in his career with New York and is considered a good bet for the Hall of Fame.

He is also just 74 hits away from 3000, but those things are not enough to give him power over the Yanks.

As a free agent he can go anywhere he wants but the money is going to be a major issue. The Yankees have already laid out a contract extension of 3 years valued at $45 million.

For Jeter this is not enough and he considers himself worth far more to his team and the league itself.

But the fact that many agents are pointing out is the fact that Jeter is in the twilight of his playing days. He has had his day in the sun and now the time for some fresh talent is coming.

However, the Yankees are still willing to keep him on their staff, but they are not willing to pay a fortune to keep him.

Other teams have expressed interest in the short stop but they are lower payroll teams that want his famous name to sell tickets. It is unlikely that the teams would be able to afford him when the chips were laid on the table.
