Revered Manager Sparky Anderson Dies

The death of Sparky Anderson, announced this morning, is the end of a legend. One of the most popular and successful managers in the history of major league baseball, Anderson was often viewed as indestructible.

However, he succumbed to complications from dementia at the age of 76.

Anderson still holds several records in major league baseball. He was the only manager who ever won World Series titles in both the American and National leagues. He was also the first manager to win three World Series titles. On the record he has one of the best overall win/loss records in the history of the game.

Anderson was part of what has come to be known as “The Big Red Machine.” During his nine years with the Reds he was able to capture two World Series titles and win an amazing 863 games.

Later Anderson would land with the Tigers and win yet another World Series title while bringing in wins totaling 1331 over a 17 year period.

These amazing records were unheard of during those years in baseball. Anderson managed in the major leagues before there was widespread steroid use. He was known as a stickler for the mechanics of the game, even requiring batting practice for his pitchers while managing in the American league.

Former players have responded with shock to the passing of Anderson. Well known as a tough competitor with a hot temper, few can imagine him falling ill and entering hospice.

Anderson died in a hospice near his home with family and friends near his bed.
